Casters for carpets versus casters for hard floors.
Casters for carpets
The wheels on the regular casters sold with most chairs have hard polypropylene (PP) treads
that work reasonably well with the soft surface of carpeted floors.
If you are buying new casters for a carpeted floor, choose ones with PP treads.
Casters for hard floors (e.g. wood floors, linoleum, and tiled floors)
If you use your office chair on a hard floor,
you will need casters that have slightly softer polypropylene (PU) treads that grip the floor better
(to prevent slipping), and that do not mark nor indent your hard floors like nylon (PP) can.
The metal pins that fit the casters to your chair.
Most office chair bases will take casters with 11mm-diameter metal pins,
but some chair bases will take 10mm-diameter pins and a few will take 8mm-diameter pins.
When you pull the casters out of the 5-star base of your chair, the metal pins will come out with the casters.
If any metal pins are stuck in the 5-star base, just prise them out of the base with the claw-end of a hammer.
It is easier to remove the metal pins from the 5-star base of a chair than to remove them from the casters,
Therefore all of our casters come with metal pins inserted.
How do I measure the metal pins in my chair's casters?:
- Pull one of the casters out of the 5-star base of the office chair
- Wrap a white piece of paper around the caster's metal pin
- Mark off the points where the paper meets itself around the pin
- Flatten out the paper and measure the length of the space between the two marks
- This measurement is the circumference of the pin
- Convert the circumference to the diameter as follows:
- 33mm circumference : 11mm diameter
- 31mm circumference : 10mm diameter
- 27mm circumference : 8mm diameter.
Caster wheel and collar Sizes.
We offer office chair casters in the following sizes:
Small casters (40mm casters).
Small casters have 40mm-diameter wheels and 16mm-wide collars.
They can be fitted with 11mm, 10mm or 8mm pins.
8mm pins are longer than 11mm & 10mm pins.

Regular casters (50mm casters).
Regular casters have 50mm-diameter wheels and 16mm-wide or 38mm-wide collars.
- 50mm casters with 38mm collars have only 11mm pins.
- 50mm casters with 16mm collars can have 11mm, 10mm or 8mm pins.

Large casters have 60mm or 65mm-diameter wheels.
